Every kidnap comedy needs one high, quiet place where the noise stops. This film found its own at 648 Monroe Avenue NW, in the old Brass Works Building on the north edge of downtown Grand Rapids. The Michigan Film Office credits it with the rooftop, the stairwell and Kate's office — three of the few scenes in the picture where nobody is running.

The building belongs to Monroe North, the strip of nineteenth-century industry that grew along the Grand River when this was a furniture city. Heavy brick, tall windows, a stairwell built for men carrying things. It was converted to offices long before the crew arrived, which is why the interiors read as ordinary working space rather than a set: someone's desk, someone's fire door, a roof with a view of the river bend and the bridges stacked up beyond it.

You cannot wander into the offices, and there is no need to. Stand on the sidewalk on Monroe and look up at the parapet, then walk fifty metres to the river. From the water side you get the roofline the camera got, with the Grand running below it and the traffic sound falling away exactly on cue.
