30 Minutes or Less|Taco Boy, Plainfield Avenue — the victory tacos

After the worst day of their lives, the two of them eat tacos. That is the whole scene, and it is the reason people still ask for directions to it. The Michigan Film Office puts the moment at Taco Boy, 3475 Plainfield Avenue NE, a family-run Tex-Mex counter on the north side of Grand Rapids.

Plainfield Avenue is the old road out of town toward the north, and this stretch through Creston still looks the part: brick two-storey blocks, painted signs, parking at an angle, businesses that have been in the same hands for decades. Nothing about it was dressed up for the camera. The film simply used a place where people already go after work.

The order to make is the one the scene makes obvious — several tacos, no ceremony, eaten fast. Sit where you can see the door. What the movie gets right about this address is the specific relief of cheap food after something has gone badly wrong: the noise of the fryer, the paper wrapper, the friend across the table who has stopped shouting at you.
