Biography | Carl Olof Cronstedt — Sentenced in Absentia, He Turned a Kiln House Into This Manor

Most accounts of Carl Olof Cronstedt stop in May 1808, when he handed the fortress of Sveaborg — Viapori in Finnish, Suomenlinna since 1918 — to the besieging Russian force.

He lived another twelve years, about six kilometres north-east of it.

Sweden dismissed him from the realm's service on 4 May 1808. The Swedish national biography records that he was sentenced in absentia on 11 February 1809 to lose life, honour and property, and was declared to have forfeited his Swedish orders on 26 March 1811.

The Finland-Swedish biographical lexicon is the account that names a court: a court-martial at Torneå, which sentenced Cronstedt and the rest of the Sveaborg command to death and to the loss of their nobility and their property.

That case went on to the war court of appeal and was let drop there, after Alexander I invoked the terms of the Treaty of Fredrikshamn.

The association that owns this house records two periods of ownership, 1793 to 1799 and 1813 to 1820, with the commandant's residence at Mäkkylä in between.

What he did with the second period is in the fabric of the building. The Finnish Heritage Agency records that the main house stands on the frame of the Herttoniemi faience works' old kiln building, converted into a dwelling to Pehr Granstedt's designs after 1813; the City of Helsinki dates the conversion to 1815.

The park is older than his ownership of it. The Heritage Agency traces it to the 1760s and the fortification officer Bengt von Spången, and credits Cronstedt's years only with the present park's shape and extent.

Two biographical dictionaries agree about what those years did not contain. The Swedish one says he received neither decorations nor official duties from the Russians; the Finland-Swedish one says he was given no public role in the state.

He died here on 7 April 1820, and is buried in a grave chapel beside the old Helsinge parish church, in what is now Vantaa.

The house is a museum today, run by the association Svenska Odlingens Vänner i Helsinge. Its own introduction to the place says he was suspected of treason and died here with his reputation lost.

Broad granite steps still drop from the garden front to the central path of the formal garden. The museum opens on Sundays, noon to two, from May to September.
