65|Meyers Creek Beach — sea stacks doing the work of a visual effect

Pull off Highway 101 a few miles south of Gold Beach and the shoulder opens onto Meyers Creek Beach, the sand belonging to Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint. The stacks here are not lined up politely offshore. They are scattered across the beach itself, black and abrupt, some of them close enough to walk around at low water. That scatter is what the film wanted. It gave a prehistoric Earth its geometry without anyone building a thing.

Meyers Creek crosses the sand and rewrites its own channel after every storm, so the route you take down to the surf in March is not the one you take in August. Wind is the constant. This stretch is a known kiteboarding beach precisely because the gap in the coast range funnels air straight through it, and on a strong day the spray comes off the wave tops in sheets.

Stand at the creek mouth in the last hour of light and watch the stacks stagger backward into haze, each one paler than the last. That receding line is the shot the film keeps returning to, and it costs nothing to see.
