The Last of Us | Canmore Engine Bridge — Across the River of Death

Joel fires one shot into the winter air and waits for an answer. Nothing moves. In “Kin,” he and Ellie cross the so-called River of Death on Canmore’s Engine Bridge, warned that anyone approaching Jackson will not return. The old coal railway span narrows the landscape to a single exposed line over the Bow River. Mountains rise on both sides, but the real tension lies straight ahead: there is no cover and no alternate route.

Reach the bridge by the Spur Line Trail or Bow River Loop and cross on foot. Built for coal transport and now part of a public walking and cycling network, the structure still has the industrial economy the episode needs—steel framing, timber deck, and the river moving below. It is open year-round, though snow and ice can change footing. Share the narrow span, keep right, and do not stop a group in the middle when cyclists or other walkers are approaching. At the western end, turn back toward the frame of the bridge and the water beyond it. The production adds threat, riders, and winter severity, but it does not invent the essential choice. Once you step onto the deck, forward and backward are the only directions left.
