The American | Castelvecchio Calvisio — The Phone Box in the Stone Ellipse

The town Jack was supposed to hide in gets barely ninety seconds of screen time, and they are the loneliest ninety seconds in the film: a man at a public telephone, feeding coins, saying almost nothing, checking the street behind him twice.

Castelvecchio Calvisio is real, and stranger than the film lets on. Seen from the slope above, the whole village is an ellipse — a medieval defensive plan in which the outermost houses form one continuous curved wall, pierced by gates and nothing else. Inside, the lanes run in concentric rings, linked by external stone staircases so numerous that walking the place feels like moving through a diagram of itself. Barely a hundred people live here year-round.

A working phone box is exactly the detail Corbijn hunts: a piece of civic machinery still bolted to a wall in a village where almost nothing else is still running, in a country that has otherwise gone entirely mobile.

Come on a weekday morning and the rings will be yours. Follow the outer curve the whole way round — twenty minutes, no more — and notice that at no point can you see more than thirty metres ahead of you. A man who needs to know he is not being followed can never know it here. That is why Jack refuses to stay, and drives on up the mountain instead.
