American Beauty | 330 South Windsor Boulevard, Hancock Park — Behind Colonel Fitts' Closed Door
kevin
South Windsor Boulevard runs between West Third and West Fourth through Hancock Park, and it is one of the calmest streets in central Los Angeles: wide lawns, deep porches, old trees planted by people who assumed the money would last. The house at number 330 supplied the interiors of the Fitts residence — the home of Colonel Frank Fitts, USMC, his silent wife, and their son Ricky with the camera.
Everything that makes those scenes unbearable was staged inside these walls. The Nazi dinner plate in its case. The locked door Ricky opens with a key he is not supposed to have. The garage, the rain, the confession that goes wrong. Mendes shot the Fitts house colder and darker than the Burnham house across the way, and the contrast only works because both were real rooms with real depth to fall back into.
Hancock Park is worth the walk regardless. It is a planned neighbourhood from the 1920s, laid out for oil money, and its architecture is the exact grammar of respectability the film spends two hours dismantling — Tudor, Colonial Revival, Spanish, every one of them announcing that a family here has nothing to hide.
Stand on the sidewalk on Windsor and look down the block. Nothing on any of these facades tells you which house holds what. That is precisely the joke Alan Ball was making, and it lands harder standing here than it does on screen.
