American Beauty | 11388 Homedale Street, Brentwood — The House Where Lester Started Over
kevin
Lester Burnham's house is not one house. It is two, and the split is the most useful thing a visitor to Los Angeles can know about this film. The street you remember — the red door, the roses under the window, the neighbours' identical lawn — was a set on Blondie Street at the Warner Ranch in Burbank, closed to the public then and now. The rooms were somewhere else. They were here, on a quiet block of Homedale Street in Brentwood, a few minutes west of UCLA, where Sam Mendes and Conrad Hall took a real Los Angeles family home and shot the interiors that made the film feel like an autopsy of the suburbs.
That matters because so much of American Beauty happens indoors and sitting still. The dinner table with the candles and the easy-listening record. The stairs Lester climbs past his wife without speaking. The kitchen where he finally puts down the asparagus. Those angles were found in a house on this street, in rooms with real ceilings and real corners, which is part of why the tension never reads as theatrical.
Homedale is a working residential street. People live here, and one of them owns the film's most famous living room. Walk it on the sidewalk, in daylight, and keep going. The point is not to see the door. The point is realising the house is ordinary — smaller than the one in your head, no roses, no red — and that the ordinariness was always the subject.
