The speech is the hinge of the film. James Marshall stands at a lectern in Moscow, throws away the prepared remarks, and tells a room of diplomats that the United States will stop trading in fear — a line his own staff hears with visible alarm. Every terrible thing that follows is the bill for that paragraph.

The room is on South Lucerne Boulevard in the Hancock Park district of Los Angeles. The Ebell of Los Angeles is a women's club founded in 1894, housed since 1927 in a Renaissance Revival complex by architect Sumner Hunt: a courtyard, a dining hall with a beamed ceiling, and next door the Wilshire Ebell Theatre. Hollywood has borrowed it for decades — Judy Garland auditioned in that theatre — because it can pass for European civic grandeur without a passport or a flight.

Look for the tall arched windows and the coffered ceiling behind Harrison Ford's shoulder; they are the giveaway. The Ebell still programs concerts, lectures and theatre nights, and a ticket to any of them puts you inside. Take the courtyard route in, and notice how small the room is once the crowd of extras is gone.
