Gwangalli is the address. Haeundae is the rumor the rest of the country already knew.

Reply 1997 keeps its friends in Suyeong-gu, but every Busan teenager in 1997 knew the longer beach to the east. Haeundae was where the city performed summer for visitors. Wider sand. Bigger hotels. A different class of noise. The series did not need to film every scene there. The name alone did the work of a class marker.

Walk the strand from the station toward Dongbaek Island and the scale changes. Gwangalli feels like a neighborhood that happens to have a beach. Haeundae feels like a beach that happens to have a city stacked behind it. That difference is why the show could stay local and still be understood in Seoul.

The sand is public. The hotels are not the point. If you come in July you will share the water with the same seasonal crowd the 1997 episodes treated as weather. Leave before the lights on Gwangan Bridge pull you back west. The two beaches are a thirty-minute argument about which Busan you meant.
