Reply 1997|Gwangan Bridge from Gwangalli — The Skyline That Arrived Late

The night postcard from Gwangalli is a lie the series never told.

Gwangan Bridge opened on 6 January 2003. Reply 1997 is set six years earlier. Shi-won and Yoon-je walking this sand in 1997 would have seen open water and a construction story, not the lighted curve that now sells the city. The production knew that. The establishing shots of Busan still needed a horizon people would recognize when the show aired in 2012.

Stand on the beach after dark and the bridge does the work the script assigned to dialect. It tells you, immediately, that this is not Seoul dressed as a port. The cables take the color of whichever festival the city has programmed that week. The traffic is a second tide.

You come here because the series made Gwangalli the home address. The bridge is the later punctuation mark. Keep the two dates separate in your head. 1997 is the year the friends were eighteen. 2003 is the year the bay got its signature line. Both are true. Only one of them belongs inside the classroom scenes.
