Racing | Formula 1 | 1991 Japanese Grand Prix — Senna Secures His Third Championship at Suzuka

On 20 October 1991, the Formula One World Championship reached Suzuka Circuit for the penultimate round, officially the Fuji Television Japanese Grand Prix, with Ayrton Senna leading Nigel Mansell by 16 points and needing only to finish ahead of the Williams driver to make the title mathematically secure.

Gerhard Berger put the McLaren-Honda on pole in 1:34.700, Senna qualified second at 1:34.898, and Mansell started third at 1:34.922, placing the two championship contenders directly behind Berger on Suzuka’s starting grid.

Berger led the opening laps while Senna held second and Mansell followed, but Mansell ran off at the first corner on lap 10 and his Williams stopped in the gravel, ending his race after nine completed laps and making Senna champion because only the Australian Grand Prix remained.

Senna later moved ahead during the pit-stop sequence, then slowed at the end of the final lap so Berger crossed first, giving McLaren-Honda a one-two finish and Berger his first victory for the team.

The official final classification records Berger winning the 53-lap race in 1:32:10.695, Senna second by 0.344 seconds, and Riccardo Patrese third by 56.731 seconds, with no post-race time penalty or exclusion altering the podium or title result.

Senna left Suzuka with 91 points to Mansell’s 69 and an unassailable 22-point lead under the era’s 10-6-4-3-2-1 scoring system, securing his third and final Drivers’ Championship after his earlier titles in 1988 and 1990.

The pin marks Suzuka Circuit in Suzuka, Mie Prefecture, at the permanent figure-eight course’s established coordinates, and the race used the clockwise 1991–99 Grand Prix configuration measured at 5.864 kilometres rather than today’s shorter layout.
