Dynastic History|Kongehallerne, Gammel Lejre — The Halls Under the Legend

Medieval Denmark knew what Lejre was long before anyone dug there. The Chronicon Lethrense and, after it, Saxo Grammaticus made this village on Zealand the seat of the Skjoldung kings, and readers of the Old English Beowulf have placed the hall Heorot here for two centuries. All of those texts were written down well after the centuries they describe, and each was written for someone. When Ole Worm had a prospect of the site engraved in 1643, he labelled the mounds on it for legendary kings. The story had a landscape attached to it before it had any evidence.

Excavation began in 1944 under the National Museum of Denmark and was taken up again from the 1980s by Roskilde's museum service under Tom Christensen. It found two settlement areas on either side of the Lejre river: Fredshøj, occupied in the sixth and seventh centuries, and Mysselhøjgård, running from the seventh into the tenth. Each had a great hall, rebuilt again and again on the same ground. The largest, House IV, measured 48.5 by 11.5 metres, with curved walls and three aisles. Radiocarbon puts major building phases around 660 and around 890. Glass beads, gold thread and imported glazed pottery describe a household at the top of the order holding this ground for four centuries.

What the excavation cannot supply is a name. No inscription, no coin die and no annal ties any of it to the Skjoldungs or to anyone else. The halls are a fact; the dynasty inside them is a text.

The site is open grass today with the hall outlines marked, Lejre Museum beside it in an old farmstead, and a full-scale hall raised from the excavation plans about a kilometre and a half west at Sagnlandet Lejre. That one is a modern building. The original survives as post-holes.
