Racing | Formula 1 | 1960 Portuguese Grand Prix — Brabham Wins a Fifth Straight Race and Secures His Second Title at Boavista

At Porto's Circuito da Boavista on 14 August 1960, the IX Grande Premio de Portugal formed round eight of the ten-race World Championship of Drivers and gave Jack Brabham the victory that secured his second consecutive title.
The 55-lap race used the same 7.407-kilometre public-road layout as the 1958 Portuguese Grand Prix, threading through Avenida da Boavista, tram lines, cobbles, kerbs, and the streets near the Atlantic coast rather than a permanent autodrome.
John Surtees put the works Lotus 18-Climax on pole with a lap of 2 minutes 25.560 seconds, only 0.070 seconds ahead of Dan Gurney's BRM, while Brabham started third in the works Cooper T53-Climax and reigning race winner Stirling Moss started fourth in Rob Walker's Lotus.
A contemporary Motor Sport report records that Brabham ran wide early and allowed six cars past, then worked back through the order as Gurney, Surtees, Phil Hill, and Moss each encountered trouble.
Surtees led until lap 36, when he struck a kerb and straw bales and damaged the Lotus's radiator, allowing Brabham through to lead the remaining laps without any later penalty or appeal altering the official result.
Formula 1's final classification records Brabham first in 2 hours 19 minutes 0.030 seconds, Bruce McLaren second by 57.970 seconds, Jim Clark third by 113.230 seconds, and Wolfgang von Trips fourth by 118.810 seconds, while Surtees set the fastest lap of 2 minutes 27.530 seconds on lap 33.
Moss was initially fifth on the road, but officials disqualified him under Article 6 after he restarted and drove opposite the race direction, promoting Tony Brooks to fifth and Innes Ireland to sixth.
The win was Brabham's fifth consecutive World Championship Grand Prix victory after the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Britain, and the result left him recognized as 1960 World Champion; it also delivered Clark's first Formula 1 podium and Surtees's first pole position and fastest lap.
