Dong Yi|Changdeokgung Injeongjeon — The Real Hall the Drama Kept Walking Toward

Changdeokgung’s Injeongjeon is the hall the Yongin set was trying to remember. The throne building sits at 99 Yulgok-ro in Jongno-gu. Sukjong actually used this palace. The woman the drama calls Dong Yi — Choe Suk-bin — lived her court life in these precincts, not on a backlot in Baegam-myeon.

Wikipedia lists Yongin Daejanggeum Park as the series’ filming home. That is accurate for the cameras. It is not accurate for the story the cameras were telling. Injeongjeon is where Joseon kings received envoys and held accession rites. The stones in front of it have been walked by the court the drama invented names for.

Buy the ordinary palace ticket. Closed Mondays. The Secret Garden is a separate reservation and a different visit. What you want for Dong Yi is this courtyard: the two-tiered platform, the painted brackets, the quiet that settles when a tour group moves on.

Stand where a water maid would have been told to stop. The hall does not need the drama to be worth the fare. The drama needed the hall to have somewhere real to point.
