Biography|Christophe De Vusser — The Market Town Between Bruges and Ghent Where He Grew Up

People who later meet Christophe De Vusser in a New York conference room tend to file him under Bain, private equity, and the MBB shorthand for the three largest strategy firms.

The earlier file is a Flemish market town.

He was born in 1972 in a Ghent maternity clinic that the published profiles do not name. The place he names as home is Maldegem, on the flat ground between Bruges and Ghent, in East Flanders.

The Oud Schepenhuis on the market is not his house. It is the civic building a visitor can stand in front of without knocking on a private door.

His mother taught kindergarten. His father worked on the line at Volvo Trucks. Those two facts, reported in the 2025 Forbes Belgique profile, are the whole of the childhood the public record gives you.

Maldegem in the 1970s was not a consulting town. It was a polder municipality of farms, small shops, and the weekly market, close enough to Ghent for a hospital birth and far enough that secondary school meant the next town over, Eeklo.

That geography matters more than a slogan about humble origins. The later career is a sequence of rooms that look nothing like this square: a chemicals desk at Procter and Gamble, a partnership floor on Avenue Louise, then the Boston headquarters of an American firm founded in 1973.

The square is where the sequence starts. A civil engineer from this hinterland became, in 2024, the first European and the first non-American Worldwide Managing Partner of Bain and Company.

Do not treat the old aldermen's house as a shrine. It is a listed building on the market, useful because it pins the town without publishing a residence.

Stand here and the later offices make more sense, not less. The work that followed was learned in other cities. The first map was this one.
