Biography|Christophe De Vusser — The July Morning Bain's First European Chief Took Office

On 1 July 2024 Bain and Company announced that Christophe De Vusser had taken office as Worldwide Managing Partner and chief executive.

The release carried two datelines, Boston and London. The legal headquarters is 131 Dartmouth Street, the eleven-storey brick-and-limestone office finished in 2002–03 beside Back Bay Station.

He had been elected on 9 January 2024 to succeed Manny Maceda, who had held the role for two three-year terms since 2018. The six-month gap is the firm's usual handoff, not a rumour.

The fact the firm itself stressed is simple. He is the first European, and the first non-American, to hold the job in a partnership founded in Boston in 1973 by Bill Bain.

By then he had been at the firm for twenty-four years, six of them as Brussels managing partner and six more leading the EMEA private-equity practice and sitting on the board. Bloomberg dates the EMEA private-equity role from November 2018 to July 2024.

This pin is the public building that houses the headquarters, not a private office and not the New York floor where he later based himself. The photograph is the Dartmouth Street face of Back Bay Station at 145 Dartmouth, immediately next door. The headquarters block starts one number down the same sidewalk.

A Belgian civil engineer from Maldegem now held the chair of an American firm that still prints Boston on its letterhead. That is the whole of the morning.

The titles piled on afterward — chairman of the board, member of the Business Roundtable, World Economic Forum circles — belong to the job, not to this date. 1 July 2024 is when the election became the office.
