Biography | Ryan Merkley — The Cambie Street Hall That Spoke for Vancouver in Games Year

People remember the 2010 Winter Games as a VANOC production and a torch on the seawall.

The City of Vancouver still had to speak for itself while the world parked on its streets.

Ryan Merkley was seconded from Toronto to this building as director of corporate communications for the Games period.

Creative Commons recorded the posting when it named him chief executive in May 2014. The Wikimedia Foundation repeated the same line when it hired him in August 2019.

The hall at 453 West 12th Avenue, at Cambie, is the Art Deco tower Townley and Matheson finished in 1936.

Council still sits here. The clock still faces the slope down to False Creek.

The secondment is a city job, not a bid-committee job.

Merkley had already run budget policy and the open-data push for Mayor David Miller. Vancouver needed someone who could talk to reporters and to staff while venues opened and streets closed.

The Games ran from 12 to 28 February 2010.

This memory is dated to opening day because that is when the city's communications load peaked, not because a transcript pins him to a specific briefing room.

No public source yet names the floor or the desk.

The pin is the hall that employed him.

After the flame went out he did not stay in municipal work.

In 2010 he moved to the Mozilla Foundation in Mountain View as director of programs and strategy, the first of a decade of open-web posts.

The building on Cambie is still City Hall.

A visitor can walk the steps, read the heritage plaque, and remember that a Winter Games is also a local government problem: permits, crowds, and a press list that does not sleep.

The secondment sits in two hiring announcements published five years apart. That is as close as the public record comes to a personnel file.
