Racing|Formula 1|1966 French Grand Prix — Brabham Wins in a Car Bearing His Own Name at Reims

On 3 July 1966, Jack Brabham started the French Grand Prix from fourth place in the Brabham BT19-Repco at Circuit de Reims-Gueux.

The race was the 52e Grand Prix de l’Automobile Club de France and the third round of the 1966 World Championship. It covered 48 laps of the 8.302-kilometre Reims competition circuit, a triangular public-road course linking the D27, D26 and RN31 near Gueux, Thillois and Muizon.

Lorenzo Bandini put Ferrari on pole with a 2-minute 7.8-second lap. He led the race and set the official fastest lap on lap 30 in 2 minutes 11.3 seconds, while Brabham stayed close enough to remain second.

On lap 32, Bandini’s throttle cable broke approaching the Thillois hairpin. He improvised a hand-operated linkage with wire and returned to the pits, but the delay ended his challenge. Brabham inherited the lead and completed all 48 laps in 1 hour 48 minutes 31.3 seconds.

Mike Parkes finished second for Ferrari, 9.5 seconds behind on his World Championship debut. Brabham’s teammate Denny Hulme was third, two laps down. No penalty changed the first six places in the official classification.

The victory was historically distinct: it was the first World Championship Grand Prix win for Brabham’s eponymous team, the first for the Repco engine, and the first championship race won by a driver in a car bearing his own name. It began a run of four consecutive victories that carried Brabham toward his third Drivers’ Championship; Formula 1’s final table records him as 1966 champion with 42 points.
