Biography|Ralph Hamers — Born in Simpelveld, Under the Tower of Saint Remigius
kevin
People who meet Ralph Hamers as a Zurich bank chief tend to start the story on Bahnhofstrasse.
The first pin is a limestone church in a Limburg mining town.
He was born Ralph Adrianus Joseph Gerardus Hamers in Simpelveld on 25 May 1966.
His father worked for the Dutch state mines and later in water management. His mother kept the house.
He grew up with older brothers in a Catholic household of the kind that still marked South Limburg in the 1960s.
Simpelveld sits against the German border, on the plateau between Heerlen and Aachen. The parish church of Saint Remigius has stood in the middle of the village in one form or another since the twelfth century.
The present neo-Romanesque building, faced in local Kunrader limestone, was enlarged between 1921 and 1925. The tower went up in 1935.
This is not the house he was born in. That address stays off the map.
It is the public building that still organizes the village he came from.
The mines that employed his father were already in retreat. The last Dutch state coal pit closed in 1974, when he was eight.
What remained was a Catholic grammar-school track that sent boys a few kilometres east, to the old abbey at Rolduc.
The later career — ING in 1991, group chief executive in 2013, UBS in 2020 — is a Dutch story that starts here, not in Amsterdam.
