Biography|Oliver Zipse — The Lichtwiese Halls Where He Finished as Diplom-Ingenieur

People treat Zipse as a factory man who arrived at BMW already formed.

The engineering degree was taken in Darmstadt.

In 1985 he left two unfinished years of computer science and mathematics at the University of Utah and enrolled in Allgemeiner Maschinenbau at Technische Universität Darmstadt.

He finished in 1991 with the Diplom-Ingenieur.

Mechanical engineering at Darmstadt then split its days.

Offices and older laboratories still sat on Magdalenenstraße in the city centre.

New halls on the Lichtwiese campus, first built in the mid-1970s, already held workshops and test stands.

The pin is that Lichtwiese block around Otto-Berndt-Straße 2, where the faculty later gathered and where the red cogwheel still marks the department door.

A visitor should not expect Zipse's seminar room.

The buildings have been extended, and the last city-centre institutes only finished moving in the 2010s.

The diploma is the paper BMW's own CVs still list first, ahead of the Kellogg-WHU executive MBA he completed in 1999.

The same year as the diploma he joined BMW as a trainee in development, technical planning, and production.

That hire is a Munich story.

This campus is the one that made the hire possible.
