28 Years Later | Holy Island of Lindisfarne — The Tide Decides Who Comes Home

Twice a day the sea takes the road back. That single fact is why Danny Boyle built the whole world of 28 Years Later here: a community of survivors living on a tidal island off the Northumberland coast, joined to the mainland by a causeway that only exists at low water. Nothing had to be invented. The warning signs are already there, the refuge box on stilts is already there, and drivers still misjudge the tables every summer and end up standing on the roof of a flooded hatchback.

The village doubled as the settlement itself. The procession the boy walks through was filmed along Fenkle Street, past the Market Cross and the Manor House Hotel, and if you stand there on a wet Tuesday in February the population is small enough that the film's premise stops feeling like fiction.

Come at the start of a safe crossing window, not the end. Walk out to the priory ruins while the mudflats are still draining, and listen: the loudest thing on Lindisfarne is usually the seals on the sandbanks, arguing.
