Andy's worst instincts get their best setting here. The bookstore where he tries to talk to Beth is Vroman's, at 695 East Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena — not a set, not a dressed storefront, but the oldest and largest independent bookstore in Southern California, founded by Adam Clark Vroman in 1894 and still trading on the same boulevard.

That history is doing quiet work in the scene. A bookstore is one of the last commercial spaces where lingering is permitted, where a stranger can stand beside you for ten minutes without explanation. Andy needs a room like that. He is a man who has never learned the choreography, and the shelves give him something to hold.

Vroman's has outlived the chains that were supposed to bury it, a pandemic that nearly closed it, and a search for new ownership that made the trade press in 2024. It survives on events — signings, readings, school orders — and on the plain fact that people still come in.

Go upstairs. Find the section you would never search online. Then stand at the end of an aisle for a minute and notice how easy it would be to say something to the person browsing beside you, and how nobody does.
