Biography|Simone Young — The First Woman in the Pit at the House on the Ring

The house on the Ring opened in 1869.

For 124 years its pit was a male room.

In November 1993 Simone Young conducted Puccini's La Bohème here and became the first woman to take the Vienna State Opera podium.

Italian reference works date the debut to that November, with Angela Gheorghiu among the singers.

The Volksoper had already let her conduct Les contes d'Hoffmann in 1992.

The Staatsoper was the house that counted in the city's hierarchy.

She arrived with references from Daniel Barenboim, whose assistant she had been at the Berlin State Opera and at Bayreuth.

The Vienna Philharmonic, which then still barred women from membership, sat in this pit for the opera nights.

Twelve years later, in November 2005, she became the first woman to conduct that orchestra in concert.

Those are two different firsts, often collapsed into one in later profiles.

The Staatsoper kept her.

By 2022 the house had given her 196 evenings and made her an honorary member, the honour conferred after a performance of Britten's Peter Grimes.

The repertoire she built here was not a novelty slot.

Wagner and Strauss sat beside the Italian titles and the twentieth-century scores.

August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll designed the Renaissance Revival house as the first major building on the Ringstrasse.

The loggia and the ring-road façade are the public face of the moment.

No private residence is marked.

A visitor can stand on the Opernring and look at the same doors she walked through in 1993.
