Biography|Simone Young — The First Woman to Conduct the Ring on This Hill

The Festspielhaus sits on a hill north of Bayreuth, at Festspielhügel 1.

Richard Wagner opened it in 1876 for the first complete Ring.

For 148 festival summers the tetralogy's conductor in this pit was a man.

On 28 July 2024 Simone Young conducted Das Rheingold here and became the first woman to lead the Ring at the Bayreuth Festival.

She was also the first Australian conductor to appear at the festival.

The engagement was a substitution.

Philippe Jordan had withdrawn.

Festival management had wanted Young for years; earlier calendars had not aligned.

Oksana Lyniv had already been the first woman to conduct any opera at Bayreuth, in 2021.

Nathalie Stutzmann followed.

The 2024 roster put more women on the podium than men, a first in the festival's history.

Young's Rheingold drew a long ovation.

She conducted three cycles of the four-opera work between 28 July and 25 August 2024.

She returned in 2025 for two further cycles.

The building is a timber auditorium with a covered pit, designed so the orchestra is invisible to the audience.

Wagner adapted the plan from an unrealised Gottfried Semper project for Munich.

Ludwig II of Bavaria paid for the construction.

The first complete Ring was heard here from 13 to 17 August 1876.

The façade and the slope are public ground during the festival season.

This is not a private house and not a current workplace routine.

It is the hill where the Ring was built to be heard, and the night an Australian conductor took it from the downbeat of Rheingold.
