Racing | Formula 1 | 1980 United States Grand Prix West — Piquet Sweeps Long Beach for His First Win

On 30 March 1980, Formula 1’s fourth championship round of the season began on the waterfront streets of Long Beach, California, under the official title Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

Nelson Piquet put the number 5 Brabham BT49-Ford on pole with a 1:17.694 lap, nearly a second clear of René Arnoux, and carried that advantage into the race without surrendering the lead.

Piquet led all 80 laps of the 3.251-kilometre temporary circuit and set the fastest lap on lap 38 in 1:19.830, completing the event’s full competitive sweep of pole position, every race lap led, fastest lap, and victory.

The official Formula 1 classification records his winning time as 1:50:18.550, with Riccardo Patrese’s Arrows-Ford second at 49.210 seconds and Emerson Fittipaldi’s Fittipaldi-Ford third at 78.560 seconds; no post-race penalty appears in that final podium order.

This was Piquet’s first Formula 1 World Championship victory and his first Grand Slam, a result that moved him level on 18 points with championship leader Arnoux and established the Long Beach waterfront as a decisive place in the future three-time champion’s career.

The race used Long Beach’s 1978–1981 street configuration, a 3.251-kilometre course whose separate start and finish lines linked Shoreline Drive, Ocean Boulevard, Pine Avenue, Linden Avenue, and the waterfront hairpins rather than the shorter layout used by today’s event.

The pin uses the published coordinates of the Long Beach Street Circuit and lies within the historic waterfront course, while the accompanying diagram explicitly depicts the 1978–1981 layout and is not a photograph of the race.
