第7話、修学旅行の自由行動で勇太と六花は二人きりの時間を楽しむはずだった。そこへ迷子になった七宮が加わり、城山から桜島を望む明るい景色の中に、三人の言葉にできない感情が並ぶ。六花の嫉妬、勇太の無自覚な優しさ、七宮が抱え続けてきた想い。副題の「ヴォルケーノ・トライアングル」は、目の前の火山とその関係を重ねている。
展望台に立つと、鹿児島の市街地、その先の錦江湾、さらに桜島が一つの視界に収まる。観光写真なら火山を中央に置けば完成する。けれど作品を思い出すと、手前に立つ人と人の間隔まで風景の一部になる。遊歩道では自然を傷つけず、展望場所を長時間占有せず、他の来訪者が同じ眺めを受け取れる余白を残したい。
噴煙の有無にかかわらず桜島は動かずそこにいる。その前で揺れて見えるのは山ではなく、三人が隠している心の距離だ。
