Hur Jun | Yangcheon Hyanggyo — The School That Still Stands in His County

The outer gate of Yangcheon Hyanggyo sits on a low slope in Gayang-dong, a short walk from Yangcheonhyanggyo Station on Line 9. Cypress and tiled roofs. A courtyard that still faces Daeseongjeon. This is the only hyanggyo left inside Seoul's city limits, restored on the site first built in 1411 under King Taejong.

Hur Jun never needed a palace to explain its first hour. The series opened in Yangcheon, where a magistrate's son born to the wrong mother learned how a county sorted people before it sorted illness. The hyanggyo was the county's official school: Confucian tablets in one hall, lectures in Myeongnyundang, dormitories east and west. A boy who could not sit the civil exams on equal terms still grew up in the shadow of this compound.

Seoul designated the site Monument No. 8. The educational function is gone. The ritual function is not. You can walk the axis from Oesammun to the shrine without a ticket line. The neighborhood around it now carries his name on a subway stop, a road, and a museum a kilometre east. Stand in the yard and the drama's first insult becomes geography. The county that ranked him still keeps the school that ranked everyone else.
