Hur Jun | Namsangol Hanok Village — Five Houses and a Stream Below Namsan

Five hanok sit in a tight row under Namsan, moved here from neighborhoods that the city was erasing. A reconstructed stream runs in front of them. Office towers start at the next block. This is Namsangol Hanok Village, free to enter at 28 Toegye-ro 34-gil, Jung-gu.

Hur Jun spent most of its hours in rooms like these, not in throne halls. A teacher dying on a heated floor. A wife boiling decoctions. A night visit when the patient was a servant and the fee was nothing. The 1999 production, like later sageuk, used preserved hanok clusters in Seoul when a set would have looked too clean. Namsangol's houses keep the proportions: low eaves, inner courts, kitchens that still smell of charcoal when a program is running.

Come in the morning before the school groups. Sit on the edge of the reconstructed stream and look up the slope toward the mountain. The drama's argument was never only about genius. It was about who got treated in a house this size, and who had to walk to one.
