People treat BNY as an eighteenth-century Hamilton bank that always printed BNY.

The ticker on this floor in 2007 was BK.

On 1 July 2007 The Bank of New York Company, Inc. and Mellon Financial Corporation merged into The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation.

Each Bank of New York share converted into 0.9434 shares of the new company.

Each Mellon share converted into one share.

The surviving common stock listed on the New York Stock Exchange under BK.

The first session of the combined name was 2 July 2007.

The companies' 2 July 2007 press release said the firm then ran more than 1 trillion dollars in assets under management and more than 18 trillion dollars in assets under custody or administration, in 2007 currency.

Bank of New York shareholders received about 63 percent of the new company.

The mechanism is two listed trust banks collapsing into one custody and asset-management parent so the tape keeps a two-letter symbol while the legal name doubles.

The common stock moved from BK to BNY on 21 May 2026.
