Esports | Gran Turismo Sport | Igor Fraga — The Tenth-to-First Decider at Le Sporting Monte-Carlo

On Sunday, November 18, 2018, Brazil’s Igor Fraga began the fourth and deciding Nations Cup race from tenth on the virtual grid while sixteen finalists sat at PlayStation 4 racing stations inside Le Sporting Monte-Carlo. Sony Interactive Entertainment and Polyphony Digital staged the publisher-run FIA-certified Gran Turismo Championships 2018 World Finals, with the Nations Cup title awarded to an individual representing a country rather than a manufacturer team.

Gran Turismo Sport simulates circuit racing: drivers manage braking, acceleration, steering, fuel, tyre wear, and pit stops while competing for finishing position. The Nations Cup final combined results from four races into a points table, and the fourth race awarded double points, so winning it was worth 24 championship points.

After the first three races, Japan’s Tomoaki Yamanaka led with 38 points while Fraga held 30, Cody Nikola Latkovski 29, and Mikail Hizal 25. The nine-lap decider put every driver in the same Red Bull X2014 Standard at Circuit de la Sarthe, isolating differences in driving, tyre sequencing, and race execution rather than car choice.

Fraga started on hard tyres, reached fourth by the end of lap three, and made his second stop with the leading group at the end of lap six. Hizal and Latkovski left that stop on hard tyres while Fraga had the faster soft compound available; on lap eight he passed Latkovski at the Dunlop Curve and then Hizal on the Mulsanne Straight.

Fraga won the race and added 24 points for a final total of 54, becoming the first Nations Cup world champion. Hizal and Latkovski tied on 45 points, with Hizal placed second on the final-race countback, while Yamanaka finished the table fourth on 40.

The competition used Gran Turismo Sport on PlayStation 4 in a controlled World Finals client. Public Update 1.29 had arrived on November 6, but Race 1 used Tokyo Expressway South, content not released publicly until Update 1.31 on December 5; because no internal event-build number was disclosed, the memory does not substitute either public revision for that private build.

The official event page names Monte Carlo Bay Hotel and Resort as host, while contemporary reporting places the racing stage in its Club Sporting setting and a later PlayStation account identifies Le Sporting Monte-Carlo as the inaugural World Finals venue. The pin marks the public Sporting complex at 26 Avenue Princesse Grace, not a hotel room, organizer office, or the streets of the Monaco Grand Prix.
