On July 10, 2022, twenty three-player squads entered the final stage of the Apex Legends Global Series Year 2 Championship at PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina. Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment’s publisher-run circuit had brought forty teams to the arena for four days of play; the surviving twenty contested the championship before a live audience.
Apex Legends is a battle royale: squads collect equipment, navigate a shrinking safe zone, and try to remain alive while eliminating rivals. In these finals, every elimination earned one point and placement added more, including twelve points for winning a match; reaching fifty cumulative points made a team “Match Point Eligible,” but the title required that team to win a later match.
FURIA crossed fifty in Match 5 and accumulated more points than anyone else, yet the match-point rule kept the championship open because FURIA did not win again. DarkZero reached the threshold in Match 8, joining five other newly eligible teams as nine of the twenty finalists entered Match 9 with a path to the title.
The last circle of Match 9 narrowed to DarkZero, Spacestation Gaming, GMT Esports, TSM, and OpTic Gaming. After OpTic, GMT, and TSM were eliminated, DarkZero defeated Spacestation—the two remaining match-point-eligible squads—and the match victory ended the tournament immediately.
DarkZero’s Australian lineup was Rhys “Zer0” Perry, Noyan “Genburten” Ozkose, and Rick “Sharky” Wirth. Their Match 9 win secured the championship and $500,000 from the $2 million prize pool; FURIA finished second and 100 Thieves third.
The event used the Windows PC edition of Apex Legends during Season 13: Saviors, after the June 21 Awakening update and before the July 19 Gaiden event. No public source identifies a separate internal tournament-build number, hardware specification, or operating-system image, so none is assigned here.
