Dynastic History|Museo Nacional de Antropología — The Palenque Crypt, Rebuilt in Chapultepec

The museum in Chapultepec park opened on 17 September 1964, in a building by Pedro Ramírez Vázquez and his collaborators, and it gathered into one place the material the Mexican state had been accumulating from sites across the country. In the Maya hall is a full-scale reproduction of the burial chamber found inside the Temple of the Inscriptions at Palenque twelve years earlier: the vault, the sculpted lid, and the jade mosaic mask and ornaments lifted from the sarcophagus in 1952.

The division is worth stating plainly. The sarcophagus and its carved lid stayed in Chiapas, in the chamber they were made for, which is now closed to visitors and monitored for humidity and temperature. The portable pieces travelled some 780 kilometres northwest to the capital, where they are shown as national patrimony rather than as the furniture of one Baakal ruler's tomb. INAH notes that reproductions of the tomb can be seen both here and at the site museum in Palenque — which is the practical consequence: at the place itself, the visitor sees a copy.

This is ordinary practice for a federal antiquities service, and it is also a decision about where a province's dynastic record is kept and who explains it. The display in Mexico City sets the objects inside a national story of Mesoamerican civilisation; the inscriptions at Palenque were cut to argue for one house's right to rule one kingdom.
