50/50|Ferguson Point, Stanley Park — the morning run under a skyline that isn't there

The film opens on a man running. Adam Lerner jogs the Stanley Park seawall in flat Pacific morning light, earbuds in, and stops at a red light on an empty crosswalk because that is the kind of person he is. Behind him, on screen, the Space Needle stands over the water. It was never there. The Needle was composited in afterward. Everything else — the Douglas firs, the driftwood, the wet asphalt curving along the shore — is Vancouver, shot on the park's western edge at Ferguson Point.
Ferguson Point sits on the bluff above Third Beach, where the seawall bends around a headland and the path drops toward sand littered with silvered logs. The Teahouse restaurant occupies a building raised in 1938 as a gun battery garrison, its lawn facing the strait. Runners round the point every morning of the year, in rain more often than not.
Stand here and the film's central trick becomes plain. The Seattle of 50/50 is a composite: British Columbia geography, British Columbia weather, a borrowed silhouette dropped onto the horizon. Adam's city never existed. Run the same stretch yourself and you get the salt smell, the crunch of gravel at the beach entrance, the ferries out past Point Grey — and an empty sky exactly where the Needle should be.
