3 Days to Kill|Square Louise-Michel, Sacré-Cœur — the bicycle lesson a dying man came home for

The film's softest scene happens on the hardest staircase in Paris. Ethan Renner, a CIA killer with a diagnosis and a few months left, has come back to a daughter who barely tolerates him, and what he can offer her is this: she never learned to ride a bike, and he is going to teach her. The lesson takes place on the terraced lawns below the Sacré-Cœur, on the sloping paths of Square Louise-Michel, with the white basilica stacked above them like a wedding cake nobody ordered.
Stand there and the geometry explains the choice. The square is a staircase disguised as a garden — two hundred-odd steps threaded between grass banks, hedges, and the funicular clanking up the western edge. A slope is a cruel place to learn balance and a perfect place to film someone learning, because gravity does the acting. Zooey wobbles, Ethan runs alongside, and Montmartre supplies an audience of tourists who have no idea a movie is happening.
The square is free, open, and busy from mid-morning until well after dark. Come early if you want the lawns without the crowd; come at dusk if you want the light the cinematographer wanted, when the limestone goes gold and the whole city drops away behind you. The carousel at the foot of the steps still turns. Buskers claim the middle landing.
What stays with you is not the basilica. It is the realization, standing on those steps, that a man who has killed for a living picked the most public terrace in Paris to do the one private thing he had left.
