Biography | Sharon McGuinness — The Chemicals Bureau on the JRC Campus at Ispra

People treat Helsinki as the start of her European chemicals life.

The file opened in Italy.

Official Irish government and ECHA biographies record that Sharon McGuinness worked at the European Chemicals Bureau until 1997.

The Bureau sat inside the European Commission's Joint Research Centre at Ispra, on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore.

The campus address is Via Enrico Fermi 2749.

The Health and Safety Authority later described the post as scientific officer work on classification and labelling.

That is the narrow job under the old dangerous-substances rules, before REACH had a name.

The Bureau itself was the Commission's focal point for data and assessment on dangerous chemicals.

It finished its mandate in 2008.

Some of the work moved to the new agency in Helsinki.

Some of it stayed at the Joint Research Centre.

Ispra is a gated research town, not a street you wander into.

Visitors still need a day permit at the main gate.

The visitor centre on Via Polonia is the public face of a site that otherwise stays behind the fence.

What can be said without invention is the sequence.

She left the Dublin lecture room, took the Bureau desk here, and by 1997 had moved on to Hewlett-Packard's government-affairs work on global chemical rules.

The later Helsinki job is easier to photograph.
