Biography | Kristalina Georgieva — The Houghton Street Year That Opened a First Bank Account

People treat a British Council year as a line on a curriculum vitae.

For her it was the first legal encounter with a Western current account.

In 1987 Georgieva arrived at the London School of Economics as a British Council scholar from Sofia.

The Financial Times later recorded the scene: she was 34, she deposited a grant of 361 pounds and 21 pounds brought from Bulgaria, and the branch sat around the corner from the school.

BBC and later official biographies both keep the LSE visiting-fellowship year.

The pin is Houghton Street, the public spine of the LSE campus in Westminster, at about 51.5144 north, 0.1166 west.

The Old Building and the street remain a working university precinct.

They are not a private residence.

Georgieva is a living official.
