Biography | Gloria Steinem — The Delhi Hostel Where the Fellowship Became a Method

Gloria Steinem reached Bombay in 1957 on a Chester Bowles Asian Fellowship from Smith College.

She was 22.

She spent about a year living in the hostel at Miranda House, the women's college on Delhi University's North Campus.

The college principal confirmed that residence after her death in 2026.

Miranda House had opened in 1948.

The hostel and the main buildings still stand on GC Narang Road in the University Enclave.

From those rooms she audited classes, wrote for Indian papers and for Smith's Sophian, and began the travel notes that became a government guidebook, The Thousand Indias.

The year that mattered most to her later work was not only the campus.

After caste violence in what was then Madras State, she walked with workers tied to Vinoba Bhave's land-gift movement, village to village, with little more than a cup, a comb, and a sari.

That walking is not a single pin.

The hostel is.

She later described India as the place where she learned that if you want people to listen, you have to listen first.

She left Asia in 1958.

The campus is public.

A visitor sees a working women's college, not a museum of her year.
