Biography|Doug Parker — American Recruited Him in This Hall Because Nashville Had a Hub

In 1984 Parker left Albion still unsure of a trade. His family had landed in Nashville. He enrolled at Vanderbilt's Owen Graduate School of Management, a few blocks from the medical campus on 21st Avenue South.

Owen's MBA class of 1986 sat in Management Hall at 401 21st Avenue South. The building has been renovated since, most recently in a 2023 expansion that grew the footprint by about half. The address is the same.

American Airlines was then building a hub at Nashville International Airport. Recruiters came onto this campus. After a first interview here, Parker flew to Dallas to meet the finance team. He took the job.

He started at American in 1986 as a financial analyst and stayed five years. The group around then-CEO Robert Crandall later picked up the nickname Brat Pack. Thomas Horton, C. David Cush, and Ben Baldanza were in that same cohort of young finance staff.

The campus interview is the hinge. Without the Nashville hub, American would not have been standing in this building. Without Owen, Parker would not have been in the room.

He later left American for Northwest, then for America West. The first airline that hired him is the last one he would run.
