Racing | Formula 1 | 1955 British Grand Prix — Moss Takes His First Championship Win at Aintree

On Aintree’s start-and-finish straight on 16 July 1955, Stirling Moss placed the number 12 Mercedes-Benz W 196 R on pole for the VIII RAC British Grand Prix, two-tenths of a second faster than teammate Juan Manuel Fangio before the sixth round of the World Championship of Drivers.

The venue was itself part of the event’s significance: Aintree’s full Grand Prix circuit had opened in 1954 inside the Grand National racecourse, and the 1955 race was the championship’s first visit to the purpose-built, 4.828-kilometre course, which was driven clockwise after its opening meeting had exposed safety problems with the intended anti-clockwise direction.

Fangio made the faster start, Moss went ahead on lap three, Fangio retook the lead on lap 17, and Moss regained it on lap 26; Motor Sport’s contemporary report records that the pair received a team signal to hold their order and pace at half-distance, but it also describes Moss having to pass Fangio on track rather than receiving an uncontested lead.

After 90 laps and 434.520 kilometres, Moss crossed the line in 3 hours 7 minutes 21.2 seconds, with Fangio officially classified just 0.2 seconds behind, Karl Kling third at 71.8 seconds, and Piero Taruffi fourth one lap down, completing a Mercedes-Benz sweep of the first four positions.

Moss also set the official fastest lap on lap 88 in 2 minutes 00.4 seconds—the same time as his pole lap—so his nine championship points combined eight for victory with the era’s one-point fastest-lap bonus.

This was Moss’s first victory in a Formula One World Championship round and made him the first British driver to win the British Grand Prix, giving the newly opened Aintree course a defining place in both his career and Britain’s championship history.
