Almost Famous|Pechanga Arena San Diego — The Door He Talked His Way Through

The scene that starts everything happens at a service entrance. William Miller, fifteen years old, holding an assignment he got by lying about his age, is turned away at the stage door of a Black Sabbath show. Then Stillwater walks up, Jeff Bebe decides the kid is an enemy worth talking to, and he is inside. Every consequence in the film runs back through that doorway.

It belongs to the arena at 3500 Sports Arena Boulevard, in San Diego's Midway district. The building opened in 1966 as the San Diego Sports Arena, ran through a decade of sponsor names, and carries the name Pechanga Arena today; almost nobody local calls it that. It is a low concrete drum ringed by asphalt, unglamorous on purpose and unglamorous by accident. Nothing about the exterior suggests that what happens inside matters to anyone.

Which is precisely the geography of being sixteen and outside a show. The building is enormous and blank, the door is small, and somebody on the other side of it decides.

It is still a working venue — concerts, hockey, boxing, roller derby — so the honest way to visit is with a ticket. Come early and walk the perimeter before you go in. The loading bays on the back side are the ones that read on screen, and on a load-in night you get the real version: crates, hand trucks, and a few people standing exactly where William stood, waiting to be let through.
