42|Engel Stadium — Ebbets Field, Rebuilt for Six Weeks in Tennessee

Ebbets Field came down in 1960. There was no way to shoot the heart of 42 in Brooklyn, so the production went looking for a ballpark old enough to carry the weight, and found one on East Third Street in Chattanooga.

Engel Stadium opened in 1930 for the Chattanooga Lookouts, built by the showman Joe Engel, who once traded a shortstop for a turkey. In 1931 a seventeen-year-old pitcher named Jackie Mitchell struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig here in an exhibition. The place was already a landmark before a single camera arrived.

Filming began on 21 April 2012. The crew hung period advertising the length of the outfield wall, repainted the concrete, dressed the grandstand in 1947 bunting, and packed the seats with local extras in wool suits. Visual effects took over above the roofline and extended the upper decks into Brooklyn. Six weeks of work left roughly five million dollars in the city. On the final day the cameras picked up the small things: a pitch, a slide into home, men in Philadelphia Phillies flannels leaning on the dugout rail.

Go with your eyes open. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has owned the site since 2008 and announced in October 2025 that the stadium will be razed for a women's athletics complex, with a memorial to mark what stood here. Preservationists have fought it through 2026. Check the ballpark's status before you drive.

If you get there while the grandstand is still up, stand behind the plate and look out past the light towers. The proportions are what the film borrowed — the low roof, the deep angles, the sense of a park wedged into a neighbourhood rather than dropped into a parking lot.
