The Crown | Winchester Cathedral — Churchill’s Last Procession

The opening of The Crown’s third season, “Olding,” marks the end of Winston Churchill’s life and the beginning of a colder political age. His 1965 state funeral took place at St Paul’s Cathedral, but the series staged the cathedral scenes here in Winchester. Its immense Gothic nave carries the coffin and congregation with the gravity the story needs: Churchill is no longer the forceful prime minister who advised the young Elizabeth, but a national figure passing beneath stone arches while the Queen watches an era close.

The location works through proportion rather than imitation. From the west end, the nave’s repeated piers compress people into a formal procession, turning private grief into public ritual. Walk that same central axis slowly, then pause far enough back to take in the full vault rather than searching for a single prop or camera mark. Finish at the nave’s centerline: face east, let the columns frame the route ahead, and hold the contrast that gives the scene its power—a famously commanding life reduced to one measured final journey.
