Racing | Formula 1 | 1964 Mexican Grand Prix — Surtees Secures the Title on Two and Four Wheels

On 25 October 1964, the Formula One championship reached its tenth and final round on the 5.000-kilometre circuit threaded through Mexico City’s Ciudad Deportiva Magdalena Mixhuca, where Graham Hill, Jim Clark, and John Surtees all arrived with a chance to take the Drivers’ title.

Clark put the Lotus-Climax on pole in 1 minute 57.240 seconds, while Dan Gurney qualified his Brabham-Climax second, Lorenzo Bandini’s Ferrari started third, Surtees’s Ferrari fourth, and Hill’s BRM sixth.

Clark led the race, but Hill’s contest changed after contact with Bandini at the hairpin on lap 31 damaged the BRM’s exhaust and forced a pit stop; this record does not assign blame beyond the contemporary report’s account of the contact and damage.

Motor Sport reported that a split oil pipe slowed Clark’s Lotus near the end, and the official Formula One classification records him fifth after completing 64 of the scheduled 65 laps rather than as a finisher on the lead lap.

Gurney inherited the victory and completed 325 kilometres in 2 hours 9 minutes 50.320 seconds, while Surtees finished second, 68.940 seconds behind, and Bandini followed 0.690 seconds later in third; the official final classification records no penalty that altered this order.

Surtees’s six points raised him to 40, one ahead of Hill on 39 and eight ahead of Clark on 32, while Ferrari also finished first in the Constructors’ standings with 45 points to BRM’s 42.

That result made Surtees the first—and still the only—person to win premier-class world championships on both motorcycles and in Formula One, turning this Mexico City finish into the defining geographic point of a record that remains unmatched.

The venue was then identified with Magdalena Mixhuca and used the original 5.000-kilometre road course, including the fast Peraltada and part of the oval; today the rebuilt complex is called Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, and the pin marks the circuit rather than an approximate incident location.
