Moss covers the stone bridges. The Shimna River runs dark under the trees. In the opening episode of the series this forest stood in for the Haunted Forest beyond the Wall and for the woods where Ned Stark found the dead stag and the orphaned direwolf pups. The paths are quiet enough that you can still hear your own footsteps. The production used the existing atmosphere rather than inventing one. Walk far enough from the car park and the ordinary Mourne woodland becomes the place the story began.
