The fortress rises straight from the rock, thirty-seven metres above the Adriatic, its thick seaward walls facing the open water. This is the exterior of the Red Keep. From the terraces you look across the small bay to the city walls and the Pile Gate, the same view that framed so many court scenes and the approach to Blackwater. The inscription above the gate still reads that freedom is not to be sold for all the gold in the world. The production used the real stone and the real drop. Stand on the upper terrace and the ordinary fortress becomes the seat of power that everyone in the Seven Kingdoms wanted to hold.
