Extraordinary Attorney Woo | The Sodeok-dong Hackberry, Changwon — The Tree the Drama Made a Monument

In episodes seven and eight, a road is going to be driven through a village called Sodeok-dong, and the thing that saves it is a tree. Woo Young-woo works out that the old hackberry the villagers hold their rites under could qualify as a Natural Monument, and a heritage designation stops a bulldozer where a legal argument could not. Then the same thing happened in real life. Sodeok-dong is invented. The tree is not. It stands on a rise at Bukbu-ri, Daesan-myeon, in Changwon, above the flat rice country along the Nakdong River — roughly 500 years old, 16 metres tall, 6.8 metres around the chest, with a crown spreading 27 metres. On 25 July 2022, with the drama still airing, the Cultural Heritage Administration announced it would formally assess the tree. On 24 August it announced the designation. The committee cited not only the tree's scale and setting but the fact that Dongbu village had held its tutelary rite beneath it for generations — living heritage wrapped around the natural kind, which is precisely the argument the fictional lawyer makes on screen. Go on a weekday morning. Park at the village entrance lot and walk up; do not drive into the village. This is a small farming settlement that had tens of thousands of visitors arrive in a single summer, and residents have been open about the strain. The Nakdong River bike path runs past, so cyclists stop here too. The tree is bare and architectural in winter, huge and green in August. Either way, walk up the slope and look back at the fields. You are standing in the one place where a television plot changed the actual national heritage register.
