Biography | Willie Walsh — The Geneva Office Where a Retired CEO Took the Industry Brief

People treat IATA as a Montreal house.

The legal headquarters is in Montreal. The executive office Walsh walked into sits at 33 Route de l'Aéroport, beside Geneva Airport.

On 1 April 2021 he became the eighth Director General of the International Air Transport Association, succeeding Alexandre de Juniac.

The 76th IATA Annual General Meeting had confirmed him on 24 November 2020, two months after he left IAG.

He had already sat on IATA's Board of Governors from 2005 to 2018 and chaired it in 2016-17. The association was not a new room.

The date mattered.

Scheduled passenger traffic had collapsed in 2020. IATA's own brief that morning put the new director general onto the recovery file and onto the carbon file the member airlines had already voted: net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

He would work from Geneva, the press release said, not from the Canadian headquarters.

The building is an office next to a working airport, which is the right joke for a career that began as a cadet at Dublin in 1979.

Walsh held the IATA job through the restart years and left it on 31 July 2026. Sandrine Le Borgne served as interim. In March 2026 InterGlobe Aviation, which flies as IndiGo, named him chief executive; he took that chair on 3 August 2026 after the Geneva term closed.

The Geneva pin is the public chapter between two airline jobs.

A visitor cannot walk the IATA floors. The airport next door is public, and the address on Route de l'Aéroport is the one IATA printed when it announced the appointment.
