Biography|Rudolf Fredrik Berg — Buried Northwest of the Church Door He Helped Place

Rudolf Fredrik Berg died in Stockholm on 8 December 1907, the same day as King Oscar II.

His brother John was the king’s physician. The court claim kept him from his own brother’s bedside. Svenskt biografiskt lexikon and Malmö stad both record the coincidence without dressing it up.

The body came south. Wikidata, citing Svenskagravar, places the burial on 15 December 1907 at Limhamns kyrkogård, plot kv 1 000, grave 0054.

The stone stands just northwest of the west door of Limhamns kyrka. A Lund diocese inventory puts it on a grass mound, inside iron railings, immediately outside the main entrance.

Berg had a hand in putting the church here. When Hyllie’s medieval church was condemned in the 1880s, the cheap plan was two small churches. Berg argued for one building in the middle of the parish. The red-brick church by Lindvall and Cronsiö was consecrated on 19 October 1890.

About seven hundred people walked in the funeral procession through Limhamn, among them workers and fishermen from the harbour he had industrialised. The municipal biography is the source for the number.

The man Limhamn called the limestone king is not under a civic monument here. He is under a family stone a few metres from the door of the church he insisted be built once, not twice.
