Racing | Formula 1 | 1959 United States Grand Prix — Brabham Pushes His Cooper to the Finish and Secures His First Title

At Sebring International Raceway on 12 December 1959, the II Grand Prix of the United States closed the Formula One season with Jack Brabham, Stirling Moss, and Tony Brooks still able to win the World Drivers' Championship.
The race used Sebring's 1952–1966 airfield configuration, a 5.192-mile (8.356-kilometre) course laid across the runways and service roads of the former Hendricks Army Airfield, and the 42-lap distance was therefore anchored to a layout much longer than today's circuit.
Moss put the Rob Walker-entered Cooper-Climax on pole in 3 minutes 0.0 seconds, Brabham started second for the works Cooper team, Brooks started fourth for Ferrari, and Bruce McLaren began tenth in the other works Cooper.
Moss led until a gearbox failure ended his race after five laps, while Brooks lost time after contact with Ferrari teammate Wolfgang von Trips and a precautionary pit stop, leaving Brabham and McLaren at the front as Maurice Trintignant closed in.
On the last lap Brabham's Cooper ran out of fuel within sight of the finish, so he waved McLaren through, climbed out, and pushed the car to the line without outside assistance while Trintignant and Brooks passed him.
The official classification records McLaren first in 2 hours 12 minutes 35.7 seconds, Trintignant second by 0.6 seconds, Brooks third by 180.9 seconds, and Brabham fourth by 297.3 seconds, with Trintignant setting the fastest lap of 3 minutes 5.0 seconds on lap 39; the published result shows no later penalty or appeal that changed those positions.
Brabham's fourth-place points left him champion on 31 points ahead of Brooks on 27 and Moss on 25.5, giving the Australian his first drivers' title, while Cooper-Climax finished the manufacturers' table first on 40 points and completed the first championship double achieved by a rear-engined Formula One car.
McLaren's victory was his first World Championship Grand Prix win and, at 22 years and 104 days, made him the youngest Grand Prix winner at that time, so Sebring marked both the arrival of a new winner and the championship breakthrough of the rear-engine Cooper.
